Go on Facebook, for some reason I'm friends with someone several years younger than me who I think just graduated high school. He's always posting pics of a blacked out new Fusion and H3 that I'm sure are his parents. Tonight he posted that he got his dream car.

Kinja'd!!!

Ahhhhh. How is this right? Why do parents do this? Here I'm working my ass off trying to get through college, saving almost every penny I've ever made since I was 13, and I see this.

Girl at my school got a C250 coupe for her first car. Crashed it within a month.

Go on Facebook,

Ah, now see there's your trouble right there. That leads right to "hate everything / everyone." :-)

But seriously, some of El_Uly's stories of parents buying their sixteen year olds Astons and such make me kind of cringe.

Most of those are driven by students on my campus.

It's insane.

I've seen a chromed out Gallardo driven by an Asian student at Michigan State. They wrecked it the second week of this semester. I don't think it's wrong to laugh in this circumstance.

Facebook is becoming a twice a month thing. I usually feel better about myself after going on it. Usually.

For as much as I wanted my dad to buy me any car, I don't think I will ever ever give my kids more than the cheapest/safest car I can find.

It's fine I read it. I absolutely appreciate what I have. I also appreciate I've had parents that helped me, and by help I mean teaching the value of money and saving.

You go to MSU?? Now I've got someone to find next time I'm over there. There's a girl over there who's trying to sell her Gallardo and her boyfriend drives her R8 too.

I noticed that whenever I drive my parents car, I had less appreciation for it. Owning my own car, I'm not so reckless. I mean, I'm paying for everything.

When my kid gets older, I'm thinking of going in at half. I really feel she should work to get the money. That, or give her the extra car and say "it's all yours, yes, even the gas and repair bills. You pay for everything".

And on a similar note, I should get her a truck. Why? Because mpg is low, and she can't travel very fair without paying a lot. Checks and balances, lol.

I feel your pain. I'm 16 in high school and have been working since I was 14 to buy most everything I need.a girl this year just got her first car: a 2014 Range Rover Supercharged Sport. Seriously!?!?

There's also a kid with a 12 Jaguar XK-R Convertible.

Kids spend their weekend buying thousands of dollars of clothes at the mall. I barely have $300 in my bank account.

I just don't get it. Even if I am super wealthy one day, I will not be buying stuff like this for my kids. They need to learn a little responsibility because the real world isn't easy.

Ive heard so many stories and witnessed so many people not taking care of the things others truly work for. I for one, didn't buy my car, nor is it under my name. But I know I have done everything to be good at school, have a scholarship, help my parents out with my brother (he is autistic), and just give them reason to trust me with a new car. Since I got it, I have washed it weekly, parked further from wherever place I go, and treated it like the most valuable thing in my life. I know a lot of people break their backs working to get something I got from my parents, I respect those people like no other and I will always take care of my things no matter how easy or hard they were to get.

I went to my ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) like a year ago, who also happened to be the father of a kid I went to prep school with. I hadn't talked to the kid in a while, but the father talked about how the son is a 'dope' and failed out of the big state school he went to (my prep school had connections that the college he went to was a matter of calling admissions to give him a spot - no applying). The ENT was saying how he's now at community college but he 'just doesn't get it'.

Fast forward three days:

On Facebook from the kid, "Thanks for the Christman Present, Dad."

I hate to be the one to say it, but when your parents are wealthy, the real world actually is much easier. Their connections hook you up with high-paying jobs, and the cycle continues. You also make friends in this environment that are also rich and connected, so you're pretty much always surrounded by people with the kind of clout to get you employed or help you find investment opportunities.

Life really is who you know, not what you know. At least from my experience.

Jealousy sucks, yeah.

But at the same time, I've had people call me spoiled for driving nice cars bought by my family. Is it my fault? Am I supposed to turn them down and drive a Corolla instead? I'm genuinely curious what you would do if your parents bought you an S5 out of the blue one day (apart from selling it to pay for school, which would be understandable)

You should be grateful, his parents are turning him into an asshole in a way that he will never be able to recover from...

One I would never ask for that, two I probably wouldn't accept it. It would just be ridiculous. Wasting money on a severely depreciating asset, I beg my parents not to waste their money. Heck, save it to help me on a down payment for a house.

Am I jealous? Not really, I could go out and buy a S5 or better right now. Doing that would only show I'm a giant idiot. Priorities.

I'm more mad that he probably begged his parents for this when he already tools around in a plastidipped 2013 Fusion and H3. Just the shaking your head kind of mad.

I totally get it. I just initially saw your post as a "This isn't fair, why can't that be me?" type of thing, not a "I can't understand the reasoning behind buying your kid one of these." one.

I agree with this somewhat, I also agree that with hard work you can achieve anything. I wish I was born into a family business or wealth, but doing it the hard way is far more gratifying.

I'm best friends with some very wealthy individuals, they are weak, and all share similar self destructive attributes. They are given opportunities I could only dream of, but in the end they never have what hard working/self made people have.

Oh yes, wealth is by no means out of the reach of people who aren't in the social circles. It just may not be as easy. But at the end of the day, rich people can be just as miserable as poor people once the magic of becoming wealthy wears off. When you start taking anything for granted, you're losing that battle.
